Hester Fassel (in orange) with Planned Parenthood volunteers
Planned Parenthood Arizona recently dedicated the lobby of their administrative headquarters in Tucson in honor of two of their longtime supporters, Dr. Hester and Raymond Fassel. I was lucky enough to meet up with Hester to ask her about her relationship with Planned Parenthood. And I have to say, Hester Fassel is one inspiring lady!
Mrs. Fassel was born in a suburb of Chicago, but she grew up in Northern Indiana. Hester became a professor of zoology at Iowa State University, and her husband Ray was a publisher at ISU Press. The two of them relocated to Tucson in 1987, after abandoning their initial plan to retire in Spain. They picked Tucson because it had a similar geography and climate to Spain, and the transition from Iowa to Arizona was fairly seamless.
The Fassels’ relationship with Planned Parenthood started when they lived in Iowa. Hester served on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood, but the Fassels were also donors. Hester explains that she got involved with Planned Parenthood because “I feel very strongly about their work. I believe that every child should be wanted.” Continue reading
As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s a good time to reflect on all of the things that we have to be thankful for this year. Although the 2010 elections didn’t turn out entirely as we had hoped, we can still be grateful for the many positive things that did happen as a result of the election. For example, because of our dedicated team of volunteers, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona was able to achieve the following goals during this year’s election season:
- From August 24 – November 2, our volunteers donated 1,002.5 hours towards electing pro-choice candidates.
- We exceeded our goal of making 5,500 phone calls by calling 6,480 pro-choice supporters.
- We knocked on 909 doors to get out the pro-choice vote.
- And our volunteers wrote 23 blog articles to help educate pro-choice voters about the issues.
You can watch our fabulous volunteers in action by watching our end of the year slide show. If you’d like to get involved for all of the exciting things we have in store in 2011, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can also express our thanks for strong pro-choice representatives, like Congressman Raul Grijalva and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, as well as state legislators like Linda Lopez, Paula Aboud, Steve Farley, David Schapira, and Daniel Patterson, just to name a few. They have consistently voted to support women’s access to reproductive health care, and we appreciate their continued support.
Finally, thank you to all of you who financially support Planned Parenthood Arizona. We couldn’t provide comprehensive reproductive health care services for women and families in the state of Arizona without you.
Here’s to a Happy Thanksgiving, and a very Happy Holiday Season as the month turns into December!
